This unit is the MiniDisc replacement people have been looking for. Sony kept out extras such as quad mic setups, overdubbing, MP3 recording, and cheap XLR inputs to focus on getting the basics right: clean mic input, useful limiting, durability (metal casing–what most MiniDisc units had, but few flash recorders currently have), and clean playback (accurate monitoring).

Here are some great features of Sony Professional Portable 24-bit Linear Audio Recorder:

PCM-D50 is a wonderful recorder and a must have if you need a high fidelity portable stereo recording device.

Here’s what one of the current owners had to say about PCM-D50:

This is a fantastic little recorder that is, I think, probably the least expensive audio recorder available capable of making professional quality recordings. I use it three ways — either on it’s own (using its’ built-in microphones), with an external Sony ECM-MS957 stereo microphone, or with an external RODE NT4 stereo microphone. Also, just for reference, I edit all my recordings on a system that has very high resolution — a Grace M902 D/A converter driving AKG K701 headphones. (R.Thompson)

Here are some great features of Edirol R-09HR High-Resolution WAVE/MP3 Recorder:

If you’re in the market for a high-end portable field recorder, look no further. The R-09HR is all you’ll ever need or want. The recordings it makes are crystal clear and it’s ease of operation and high quality with built-in mikes is great.

Here’s what one of the current owners had to say about R-09HR:

The Edirol R-09HR is an amazing device. It looks a bit like an electric shaver and fits in the palm of your hand. A friend of mine has the Zoom H4 which is much larger, has cheap plastic finishing and a clumsy user interface. Although the H4 may have a few extra features the Edirol R-09HR is much better made and designed and I think it is a better buy. (Beagle)

Here are some great features of Zoom H4n Handy Portable Digital Recorder:

If you need a recorder for any reason, even if it’s just for a school project, or for recreation, don’t buy the cheapest recorder you can find. Spend a little extra money and get the H4n, it’s seriously worth the extra cash for something that will last you much longer. It’s simply the best value for a handheld recorder on the market right now.

Here’s what one of the current owners had to say about it:

I was surprisingly impressed with the sound quality. I am an audio engineering student, going to school for sound reproduction, and sound reinforcement. Needless to say, I know my way around a microphone. I was expecting this unit to sound average, just like a pocket (or handheld) recorder usually sounds. But in fact, the H4n sounds pretty decent. The high end is nice and defined, the microphones built into the unit sound really clear. The one thing I can say about the sound is that it is accurate.

Here’s what one of the owners had to say about the H2 Portable Stereo Recorder:

What an amazing product! As a vocal performer, I consider it a stereo mike with a built-in recorder. And the sound is far superior to the thin audio signal of most digital recorders — the Zoom’s built-in condenser mikes deliver rich, full-bodied sound. (Robert S)
